Jim Rohn famously said “You are the average of five people you surround yourself with, so choose them wisely”! I couldn’t agree with this more!
There is no investor out there who has not lost some money. We make some great choices, some good choices and sometimes some not-so-good ones. As long as we make mostly great/good choices we come out ahead. In investing, besides knowledge, understanding your risk tolerance and tendencies as an investor, the keys I think to being a successful investor in the long term are:
- A Mindset of Abundance
- A Vision for your Future
- Surrounding yourself with people that inspire you
Today I want to talk about the company we keep. If the people we surround yourself with are doing the things we want to be doing we not only learn from our continued communication with them but subconsciously we don’t take mediocrity or less-than-our-best as acceptable anymore. Since our subsconscious changes our attitude and habits change.
I spent two days this week in Dallas presenting at a meetup and then attending a networking event where some of the brightest and best minds were in attendance. I regularly put these events on my calendar because surrounding myself by people who are functioning at their best motivates me to perform at my best too.
From attending Tony Robbins seminars, Grant Cardone’s events, to a host of real estate and other events – my biggest takeaway from these events is that most people are gung-ho and inspired for a short few days, they go back to their own lives and after a few weeks get back into their old routines and habits and mostly don’t apply much of what they learn. Most of us have good intentions but we struggle with keeping the energy and momentum going with our daily busy lives although we are all fired up temporarily. I struggled with this too – until recently and I have to keep myself constantly in check.
Some tips I’ve applied in my own life to sustain momentum that I’d like to share with you:
- STEP OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE Sign up to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Find opportunities or create opportunities to step outside your comfort zone often. If you’re afraid of public speaking sign up to for Toastmasters, or offer to do a presentation at work – pick up a topic that you’re passionate about and let the passion flow through in your talk, you might forget that you’re even nervous anymore and surprise yourself. This will certainly not only force growth but also give you a boost of confidence which is important for sustaining momentum.
- ATTEND EVENTS Attend paid or free meetups, events, conferences on. a regular basis which draws the kind of people you envision yourself to be. This is a surefire way of soaking in not only the knowledge but also the mindset and energy that you will find these events bring together. If you’re too busy for them – you just need to make time and prioritize it. No excuses or shortcuts there! 🙂 Be picky about the events you attend and make time for it. Be picky about people you spend time with and cut out time-wasters and energy suckers from your life. Be ruthless about it.
- SET PERSONAL GOALS Goal-setting is important, with our families, work, commutes and other life commitments our own goals are sometimes left by the wayside. While we are employees we set goals for our job positions but most of us rarely “get time” to work on our personal goals. Change THAT. Make time for YOU and YOUR GOALS. Set a modest weekly goal, evaluate how well you did maybe at the end of each month and give yourself a pat on your back for a job well done. Don’t worry about all the to-do items on your list just focus on all the items you’ve crossed you! Kudos you’re almost there!
- SELF-CARE This comes up repeatedly in every discussion I seem to be a part of these days. Just like putting on a oxygen mask on yourself before you can take care of people around you, to be our best in our lives and keep the energy we need to be successful – self-care is a must. A lot of us – especially women tend to be very poor at boundary-setting, saying “no” and self-care. Say “no” more often than you say yes and know when your plate is full and you’re feeling overwhelmed. Set boundaries on when meetings get scheduled at work. Make time for routine self-care – whether that is workout 3-4 days a week, a spa day once a month or meal prepping so you can eat healthy all week. Whatever makes you feel like you’re putting your best foot forward as a person. It will help you enormously in not feeling tired and depleted and instead be gung-ho, ready and brimming with confidence. Personally working out 4-5 days a week, massage once a month and a manicure is a part of my self-care routine. I am more confident and I feel more powerful when I feel good about the way I look, a little vanity never hurts and we all know workouts are amazing for your well-being!
Hope these tips help you find the momentum you need to be the best in your life
